🇬🇧 Before a public discourse about the topic of food waste emerged, in the late 1990s, a group of dumpster divers involved with the "Food Not Bombs" movement came up with the term "Freeganism" as they collected food for public meals. The word started as a joke and later became part of an ideology of reducing participation in capitalism, primarily through the appropriation of waste.
Today, food waste is a hot topic, especially in Europ...e and North America, and freegans are understood in different ways, however for Alex Barnard, author of the book "Freegans: Diving into the Wealth of Food Waste in America", "freeganism is a form of ethical consumption that rejects ethical consumption. It is about providing for your needs in a way that is ethical, but it's also rejecting the possibility that you can do that by buying things."

🇩🇪 Bevor ein öffentlicher Diskurs über das Thema Lebensmittelverschwendung entstand, erfand eine Gruppe von Mülltauchern in den späten 1990er Jahren den Begriff "Freeganismus". Die an der "Food Not Bombs"-Bewegung beteiligten Mitglieder sammelten Lebensmittel für öffentliche Mahlzeiten und verstanden den Begriff zunächst als Scherz. Später wurde "Freeganismus" Teil einer Ideologie zur verringerten Teilhabe am Kapitalismus, insbesondere durch die Verwendung von Abfällen oder Ausschuss.
Heute ist Lebensmittelverschwendung vor allem in Europa und Nordamerika ein aktuelles Thema, und Freeganismus wird auf unterschiedliche Weisen verstanden. Für Alex Barnard, Autor des Buches "Freegans: Diving into the Wealth of Food Waste in America", "ist Freeganismus eine Form des ethischen Konsums, die den ethischen Konsum ablehnt. Dabei geht es darum, Bedürfnisse auf eine ethische Art und Weise zu befriedigen, aber auch darum, die Möglichkeit abzulehnen, dies zu tun, indem man Dinge kauft."
