Blocking people and servers

Some servers deserve to be blocked from federation. Some people deserve to be shunned from federation and never seen again in channel, timeline or stream.

How can I do that? There does not seem to be any way.

@Crow Under /admin/security/ you should be able to block both other domains and specific users from your server. For individual users, there's the the Superblock app.

@Crow hmm... Have you try Superblock application on your Hubzilla instance to block people? Regarding block instance at all i think that this is admin feature.

In Hubzilla, you would go to Admin > Security. Your hub can block domains and channels.

Thanks. I forgot about that add on. I want to defederate every Nazi. I *am* my admin, so if there’s a way to do that, please point me there.

There are some outrageously vile domains out there.

@Altyr on Stream yes I want to block federation to a Nazi hubzilla instance. If I knew what I was looking for in technical terms, I’d hopefully know where to find it.

Seems that it’s in admin>security “block communication from these servers” but I’m uncertain if that’s the same as defederation.

What I’d really love would be a “BLOCK” button right next to “CONNECT” any time I see a profile that belongs to a racist dirtbag. Even better if, like Mastodon, it easily gave me the ability to block the whole domain a scumbag is on.

When you hover over a profile pic, a white triangle becomes visible. When you click on it, it opens a menu that includes "block completely". Clicking on that adds someone to the superblock list. The app itself (like in the app menu, or the sidebar) is only needed to un-block someone from that list.

To block traffic from complete domains (servers), you have to go to the administration menu (I think it's the item "Security"), and there is a blacklist and a whitelist for whom you server will (not) federate with.

Superblock is on user side. A user can block someone, but won't prevent their posts to reach your hub (and be federated to other hub).
It's a fix linked to "I don't want to see this shit".

On the other hand, changing instance configuration as hubmin block the posts, and prevent them to be relayed through your hub.
It's a "I don't want this shit to spread" fix.

How does it handle posts on another hub? For example, if someone posts on a public forum, or comments on a post on a public forum, what do these blocking options do?

I would assume superblock would hide any comments that the blocked channel makes (i.e. the user blocking them wouldn't see it). And an admin block would prevent these posts from being sent to users server-wide. The only leak I can see is if a blocked user created a new post on a public forum, since Hubzilla marks the forum as the sender, instead of marking the user as the sender. Is that how it works?

@Scott M. Stolz It actually blocks posts relayed via a forum, too. However, I have seen many ghost notifcations, and blocked messages where not in the stream, but sometimes in the HQ list. Not sure if this was a bug.

"Admin blocks" would be entries in the admin menu under "do not import posts from these servers", "... users", or "...with these keywords". So, they are actually not imported.

@Crow ah yes you mean network stream. I see the block option there... but my network stream is 95% stuff reshaped/linked from my Mastodon account. I would love an ability to preemptively block someone I run into on another instance.

@Crow Several addons modify the GUI. Superblock ads the menu entry "completey block" to the Avatar menu. It also provides the list of superblocked people (once filled) to undo superblocks.

It is my understanding that Superblock is for individual users, and Admin > Security is for site-wide bans. If you want to ban them for your entire hub, then Admin > Security is the better way to do it.

The problem is that drop down doesn’t show up all the places that it’s needed: in a connection request, on the @Hubzilla Support Forum forum right sidebar where connections are shown, several other places where objectionable faces show up.

@Crow That's unfortunately how it is for the moment. And there's no other way to input people you want to block as it is now- There's a ticket for it in the issue tracker, though: https://framagit.org/hubzilla/addons/-/issues/116

Might be a good first issue for those of us trying to get into contributing to the code.

if you get a reshared post you see this line first

Copy the link behind "post" and search in HZ for this URL and HZ will open the original Post in the HZ user interface - click on the avatar and block

there is a nice Addon which can help you do submit the URL in to the HZ search mask.

@Crow There is no configuration for superblock other than to remove superblocks from people. To superblock someone, you click on their profile picture on a post and choose "block completely" from the menu.

In the message above, I now see the Block, Ignore, and Hide you were referring to in another thread. I hadn't thought about the connection request responses. In that context, I can guess the differences. If I am right, they all have to do with your connection status and possibly future connection requests. I don't think they have anything to do with whether you see this person "in the wild". That is what superblock is for. You and I don't are not connected, but we can have this conversation because we are both connected to @Hubzilla Support Forum. If I were to superblock you, I would not see your messages here. I would see people talking to you, but would not see your responses. On the other hand, if you were to send me a connection request, I don't think any of those responses would change how this conversation would look to me. If I am mistaken about this, someone please correct me.
