hi,
since the twitter inundation began i noticed that some of the posts from mastodon accounts get ever longer and keep showing up in my stream any time another comment is added. i would like to get rid of these single posts without unfollowing the account they were published by.

i was of the impression that this could be achieved by choosing the point "do not follow anymore|nicht mehr folgen" from the drop down menu of the relevant post. but this doesn't seem to be working. every post i have tried this with still keeps showing up in my stream any time there is a new "welcome, george" comment added to the post.

so my questions are: is this the right way to get rid of single posts? is it even possible to do this in hubzilla? or is this a bug? or am i missing something else there?

When you select the "Unfollow thread" action, you will no longer get notifications from the post/thread you selected it for. But the thread will not be filtered from your view. If you sort the network stream by last commented you will still see the post in your stream whenever a new comment is added.

Personally I sort by posted date instead. That works better for me, but I don't know if there's any way to actively hide a thread from appearing in the stream.

If you click the gear icon and hit "Delete", that removes a post from your stream.

This is a question I have had for years. For me, neither unfollow nor delete kept them from coming back when new replies showed up. It has been a while since I last tried. I should try again to see if anything has changed.

Maybe there's a difference in whether the posts come in from Mastodon or from Zotsites? No idea.

I can't say I thoroughly tested this, since, like @Harald Eilertsen, I sort my stream by Posted date instead of Commented date.

This is what I just found on Streams. It's not what I expected, but it makes sense if I think about it differently. "Delete" only deletes what I'm seeing -- the original post and current comments. It doesn't keep deleting into the future. When a new comment arrives, I see it, and the server finds the original post (again) so the comment is attached to something.

I need a better understanding of post/comment delivery. I have a dim grasp of the concept that it's more like e-mail than like centralized social media, but I don't always see what that implies.

I like the email analogy and see how it makes sense that it behaves this way, but just like deleting the original email of a reply chain that never seems to end, this feature seems pretty useless unless we are missing something.

Well, if Hubzilla receives a comment where it does not have the parent from (either because it was not received in first place or it was deleted), it will try to fetch it.
Since deleted posts are not stored forever, there is no way to determine if it was deleted or just not received and it will be imported again.

There is some large message I keep deleting (3 times now, I think) because I don't know the language. I don't know of it keeps getting edited, but it keeps coming back. Mostly, I keep deleting it to test this very thing. Last time I did Unfollow and Delete. We shall see if it returns again.

Those are not actually notices. They just show you the items you have not seen yet. There is no way to stop/hide them atm.

And there it is again (and another thread, as well). As far as I can tell, Delete and Unfollow are useless to me. I will be curious to see if I stop seeing the message in question if I stop actively trying not to see it. I have nothing against the message, I just chose it as a test subject.

@Mario Vavti Yes ...but this does not lessen the fact that the notifications widget is not that useful when you follow accounts with lots of followers

e.g. an account with K tausend followers just post "Good Morning" and this post get hundred replies with "Good Morning" they all show up in the notifications widget like spam - its kind of annoying and it would be great to have a way to silence this kind of notifications...

this can't be done my word filtering

There might be some workaround for mastodon contacts: I usually do not connect to large channels, anymore, but to their rss feed (URL version of their channel, + .rss). This way, I should not get other's comments, but only the contact's posts.

Try adding the same channel twice. There seems to be a bug where the channel is not added the first time, but then the second time.

Yes, that's far from ideal, but easy to work around.

Your welcome - I love that feature (especially since Hubzilla can read RSS of the hubmin allows it. It clears up my timeline substantially.
