"social networking" vs "social media"
Now I get a more clear view on it all: For me the Fedi is all about "social networking" but it seams that many who write about the Fedi are after "social media" .... maybe also because in their world "social media" took over "social networking" a long time ago.
....................
Back in the late 90s, an entire industry grew up around spam prevention. That industry is now called "social networking" (alternatively "social media"); where at one time we completely eliminated spam by only accepting messages from people we knew and approved.
Then the industry leaders got greedy and introduced their own spam that they wouldn't let you get rid of.
Then new networks arose that made everything fully public once again - and the buddylists of yesteryear literally became a contest to see who could amass the largest follower count and be known as a social media influencer, instead of their original purpose as a spam prevention measure.
Not surprisingly, the spam returned.
Those that don't know history are doomed to repeat it.
