Here is an other post of my series about WebDAV & CO.
In the last post i showed you how to connect your pc and phone by WebDAV to the Hubzilla/streams cloud.
The files you but in the Fedi cloud are meant in general for sharing to other contact in the network and
we have tools to do it privately. Hubzilla/streams provide the option to encrypted massages by a phrase
https://im.allmendenetz.de/channel/chris?mid=5dcdc6d3-6717-44a0-be28-33388658a95e and
if you share a file by a link also this link will be encrypted but the file itself will not be encrypted. There is a tool which can help to also encrypted the files and it is called cryptomator:
https://cryptomator.org/The Windows, macOS and Linux version are free, the Android and IOS version do cost:
https://cryptomator.org/pricing/So
on the desktop you can start using cryptomator without hesitating today - install it and give it a try.
There is a good documentation also:
https://docs.cryptomator.org/Click the "Add" button for adding a new Vault
and follow the process
https://docs.cryptomator.org/en/latest/desktop/adding-vaults/As "storage location" pick a folder in your Hubzilla/streams cloud.
To get there you need a WebDAV connection I hope you have set up by now. If not go for it now:
https://im.allmendenetz.de/wiki/chris/WebDAVAfter you set up a Vault and unlocked it with the password you defined you can start uploading files in the open Vault folder.
In the cloud this files are always encrypted - no way to read them... but from your PC you can lock and unlock them with the help of cryptomator.
So this is the way to save encrypted files in your Hubzilla/streams cloud.
If you share the URL of the folder and the password of the Vault to a friend of you he/she may oben and see files if he/she uses an own cryptomator installation on their PC and by adding the existing Vault to which you posted the URL.
The downside is that you have to share also the WebDAV credentials to the cloud folder first. So better set up an extra Hubzilla/streams account for this all and share just with friends you can trust. So you just have to find a secure way to exchange the password and you will get with the Hubzilla/stream cloud and the external cryptomator installation a very secure way to exchange all kind of privat files.
Any time you upload a new file you may write your friend a notification post over the Fediverse. That's it.Do you find this extended use of a Hubzilla/streams channel helpfull?
In the next post i will show how with the help of WebDAV you can use a Hubzilla/streasm channel very easily als a "read it later" app like you may know from pocket or Wallabag.
